TENACIOUS TRACKER
ROLE
Product UX Designer
I joined the talented Tenacious Tracker team as a Product UX Designer focusing on creating insightful and user-friendly interfaces that help users monitor and improve their personal development.
I was responsible for designing insights, correlations, reports, onboarding and the tracking experience for both desktop and mobile screens, based on the data gathered through user interviews and analytics tools.

We conducted user and market research to drive our planning phase.
By speaking to potential users, we came across some prevalent pain points:
User insights
“I want to have a centralized place to record my tracking data, reflections and notes on how different activities affect me, so that I can better understand the impact of my habits and choices.”
Our solution
An insight-first tracking product that replaced fragmented tools with a single platform, enabling users to uncover relevant patterns, build habits, and make data-backed decisions.
“I want to gain insights into the factors that impact my well-being so that I can make informed decisions on how to improve my happiness, energy and sense of connection.”

Early feedback
With a landing page and a waitlist already in place, we provided early access to these users during the soft launch phase with only the tracking function to gather direct feedback from early adopters.
This decision allowed us to test our core functionality and validate our design in real-world conditions.
Mobile adaptors
My earliest design challenge was adapting the tracker for mobile. The desktop design emphasized a broad view of data to help users understand trends. I hypothesized that mobile users would prefer simplicity over detailed data visibility, but stakeholders were divided. Lacking qualitative data to support my hypothesis, I conducted user interviews to better understand their preferences and needs.
27% Boost in daily user engagement
Following the roll out of the mobile web app design, we saw a significant 27% boost in daily user engagement. User satisfaction has also increased, as discovered through follow-up interviews. Users shared that the convenience of tracking on the mobile has greatly enhanced the overall experience.
"It’s too cluttered on mobile right now.
I want a simpler, easier way to input my data."
“I often track right before going to sleep, and I don't want to use my laptop. I prefer to add my tracking data and handle small updates directly from my phone.”
Actionable insights
After the success of the mobile web app, I focused on improving the desktop experience, particularly the insights screen. My goal was to design an intuitive interface that helps users easily analyse their data and understand which influences most impact their desired outcomes.
As I embarked on this task, I asked myself some key questions:
-
How can we present complex data in a way that’s easy to understand?
-
How can we empower users to quickly identify key information and make informed decisions based on the data?
Two-Tiered Solution
To help users understand how influences impact outcomes, I created a two-tiered approach offering both a high-level overview and deeper detail, allowing users to focus on what matters without being overwhelmed.
Insights overview
Crafted to provide users with a clear, organized view of individual outcomes and the factors influencing them.
User Benefit
Simplifies data complexity, empowering users to make informed decisions by focusing on the most impactful factors.

Influence Analysis
Highlights positive and negative influences on each outcome, helping users quickly identify what drives or hinders their success.
Actionable Insights
Key insights are provided for each outcome, offering users targeted takeaways that can inform their next steps.
Correlations
The Correlations tab was designed to allow users to explore the relationships between different metrics more freely.
User Benefit
Uncovers hidden relationships between metrics, offering a more comprehensive view for nuanced, data-driven decisions.

Correlation Exploration
Enables users to explore relationships between metrics through visual tools.
Testing the two-tiered insights screen with 20 participants revealed that users:
-
appreciated the clear separation between the Outcome Overview and Correlations tabs.
-
quickly grasped the positive and negative influences on their outcomes in the Overview tab.
-
found the actionable insights highly valuable and straightforward to implement.
“I think it’s unique because it’s telling you what’s holding you back. I’ve never seen anything like that. It’s giving you some really good feedback.”
“It’s definitely better than what I’m currently using […] it allows me to get insights and analytics […] and taking the next step and actually thinking long-term about the impact of those decisions.”
“This is different because it gives you feedback into what’s lacking and how to step things up.”
After the success of the mobile web app, I focused on improving the desktop experience, particularly the insights screen. My goal was to design an intuitive interface that helps users easily analyse their data and understand which influences most impact their desired outcomes.
Bridging Vision and Execution
During the design phase, clear communication and thorough documentation were crucial. I created reference materials like wireframes and prototypes to illustrate design goals and user interactions. Starting with sketches and white-boarding, I refined concepts into high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes. This approach facilitated stakeholder feedback, secured approvals, and ensured alignment with the design vision and strategy.

Specs for Effective Cross-Team Collaboration
To ensure clear communication across teams, I developed detailed design specs which included customer journeys and visual design specs for design system guidelines. These documents served as the foundation for all cross-functional collaboration.

Prototypes were key for feedback and team alignment. By addressing high-risk areas first, I identified issues early, refined the design, and secured consensus. Regular communication and check-ins resolved concerns quickly, ensuring a smooth implementation process.

Soft launch for early adopters
Since the launch of the tracking tab, we have implemented some changes and introduced onboarding, tracking plans, weekly reports, social reports, insights and a mobile version of the web app.
Since these updates, we’ve seen notable improvements:
-
Median active days per customer increased by 37%
-
New user retention rates have improved by 26%
Other features under my responsability
Tracking plans
Recommends metrics based on user goals and interests to focus on key aspects of personal development.

Weekly and sharable overview to keep users motivated and on track with their goals.

Reports

Onboarding
Help users understand the app’s value quickly and guide them toward meaningful first actions.
Key learnings
-
The early launch of the tracking tab provided invaluable insights into both user behaviour and our development process.I learned the importance of prioritizing core features and gathering direct user feedback to guide iterative improvements. This experience highlighted the need for a flexible approach, allowing us to adapt quickly based on real-world use.
-
Effective communication across teams proved essential; maintaining alignment and clarity among all stakeholders helped streamline development and avoid misunderstandings. This experience reinforced the importance of having everyone on the same page to ensure cohesive progress and successful outcomes.
These lessons have been instrumental in shaping our strategy and ensuring that subsequent features and updates align closely with user needs and expectations.
Next steps
Having observed median time spent on the tracking tab has risen by 40%, I would aim to streamline user experience through integrations. by connecting with platforms such as Whoop, reducing the time spent on the tracking tab.
From speaking with our users, we learned there is a desire for deeper data analysis and progress tracking. To address this, I would introduce the Progress feature, which would:
-
Compare Performance: Allow users to compare their data to previous weeks or months.
-
Track Trends: Provide detailed insights into performance trends over time.
-
Set and Monitor Goals: Help users set personal goals and track their achievements.
-
Provide Actionable Feedback: Offer recommendations based on performance data.
And lastly, I would continue to gather user feedback to identify areas for further enhancement based on real-world use to help us optimizing the web app, providing users with valuable insights and a more refined experience.
